HC commuted death sentence to life imprisonment
The Odisha high court on Wednesday commuted the death sentence awarded to Bisi Munda, for raping and murdering a minor girl in Sambalpur last year, to life imprisonment.
“The division bench of Justices Pradip Mohanty and Biswajit Mohanty reduced the sentence after it found that it was not rarest of the rare case,” said petitioner’s counsel B K Ragada.
The ad-hoc additional sessions judge, Sambalpur, had sentenced Munda (26) to death on January 11. The court had observed that ‘pre-planned, cold-blooded and diabolic murder of an innocent three-year-old girl after raping her undoubtedly comes under the purview of the rarest of rare case’.
