Selection of vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University
Governor and chancellor of universities S C Jamir has called three professors for an interaction on October 10 to select one of them as the next vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University. Incumbent Bishnu Barik’s term ends November 9.
Chancellor’s office sources said the three – Satyaban Jena (Utkal University), CR Tripathy (Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology) and Sarat Acharya (Sambalpur University) – have been sent letters to attend a one-on-one interaction with Jamir.
The three have been asked to appear before the chancellor with their vision plan should they become the VC for the varsity located in the western part of Odisha for a period of three years. The chancellor is likely to announce name of the VC on the same day after the interaction on October 10.
Speculation is rife about possible advantages and disadvantages of the three candidates. But one thing is certain that the next VC would be someone from a science background as all three short-listed candidates are from science background. While Tripathy is a computer scientist, and Jena a professor of chemistry, Acharya is a professor of statistics. The outgoing VC (Bishnu Barik) is from humanities (sociology) background.
A three-member search-cum-selection panel led by Lalit Mansingh (chancellor’s choice) and having members G Behera (syndicate nominee) and Kamlesh Jashipura (UGC nominee) had short-listed the three after a marathon interview of 15 aspirants, from among over 40 applicants, over a period of two days on September 21 and 22. The incumbent VC was also among the 15 aspirants looking for a second term.
Special importance is being attached to the next VC as s/he would preside over the golden jubilee celebrations of the university in January 2017. The university started functioning on January 1967 following the state assembly passing the Sambalpur University Act on December 10, 1966.
